Between two oceans – 16 days
DAY 1: Welcome to Costa Rica
Arriving at San José.
Accommodation at Hotel Aranjuez. It offers the comfort and tranquility of a genuine Costa Rican home from the thirties.
DAY 2: Volcano Irazu
Hike to the Irazu Volcano (the highest volcano in Costa Rica).
Irazu Volcano National Park is located on the Central Volcanic Range, 31 km northeast of the city of Cartago. The origin of its name comes from an indigenous community that existed in the slopes of the volcano called “Iztarú”. The word meant to them trembling hill and thunder. However, through the years, as a result of verbal communication, it changed its name to Irazu.
Transfer to the Caribbean.
Accommodation in Casa Calateas where you can find the viewpoint of Talamanca, including an impressive view of the region. It is an agro ecological accommodation which belongs to the Association of Preservation and Development of Carbón Dos, the members are farmers who live in the community. They make efforts for the sustainable use of the forest and its production. They also commercialize organic products (cacao and banana) and preserve the forests. In this way they have developed a productive system which is environmentally and economically sustainable, improving substantially, the quality of life of the farmers.
DAY 3: Cahuita National Park
Visit to the Cahuita National Park
Cahuita comes from the terms “Kawe” which means “Sangrillo” (tree of the zone) and “Ta” which means “tip”; in other words “Tip of Sangrillo”. The park includes an area of 1,106 hectares in the terrestrial part, 600 hectares in the reef area and 22,400 hectares in the marine part. The park was created to protect the flora and the terrestrial fauna, coral reefs and several marine ecosystems. It has one of the best developed Coralline Reefs of the Caribbean coast, and it is one of most important of Costa Rica. It also protects a part of swampy forest with unique vegetation, Yolillo and Sangrillo. It is one of the most beautiful parts of the country with its white and black sandy beaches, the thousands of coconut palms, the turquoise coloured sea and the coral reefs. It is a perfect place to swim and to relax.

DAY 4: Visit to Puerto Viejo
A day at your leisure: Enjoy nature and beaches of this region or visit the typical Caribbean city of Puerto Viejo.

DAY 5: Sarapiquí
Transfer to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí.

Trail ‘Los Lomas’: The tour begins at the Albergue restaurant. The trail is a 1-km circuit that will take you through the primary and secondary forest. We hike around the facilities of Albergue El Socorro and learn about the varied flora and fauna that occurs near our house. Much of the trail goes along the river and along the way you can see a large variety of plants, many birds and with a bit of luck, you will also see white-faced capuchins, spider monkeys, tapir tracks and a white hawk.
DAY 6: Agricultural Day
We continue the journey to the community of San Marcos de Cutris where you will meet with the real culture of Costa Rican farmer.
It’s a community where people mind environmental conservation and rescue of their culture.
Tour: Agricultaral Day
During this tour we will see different agricultural activities and you can experience the farmers’ daily life: Visiting different farming families, we will learn how to use animal manure to produce biogas and organic fertilizer. This interesting process makes it possible for the families to reduce environmental pollution and improve their social and economic wealth.
We will visit the farm of the Vega Castro family who is cultivating pineapple for already more than 30 years. They will explain us the whole process of the cultivation and we will taste fresh pineapples. We will also have the opportunity to milk, see the production of cheese and learn how to make “tortillas” with cheese on the stove and serve coffee the traditional way.
After the tour: Transfer to the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge.

DAY 7: Caño Negro
Boat tour to the wildlife refuge
The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, located in the North of the country, is part of the Arenal Huetar Norte Conservation Area and consists of a system of rivers and lakes that hosts a biodiversity of great importance being food supply for a variety of species, including migratory birds coming from northern countries. Here you can find the largest population of caimans in the country and it is also home to the Gaspar fish, which is considered as a living fossil.
The Caño Negro community is a community committed to the conservation of its most important natural attraction, the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. These wetlands are considered of international significance serving as a shelter for a large number of migratory species, species in danger of extinction and commercially important species.
Tour to Caño Negro butterfly farm
A group of local families from Caño Negro offer the visit of a Butterfly Farm during which the history of the site, the number of species, the reproduction process, the objective of conservation and the process of the artisan production are explained, while at the same time the great variety of orchids in the garden can be enjoyed. The families have managed to reproduce and protect species that are in danger of extinction.

DAY 8: Rio Celeste
Walk in the Tenorio Volcano National Park to Rio Celeste
The Volcano Tenorio National Park is located in the Volcanic Mountain Range of Guanacaste. In this area exists a variety of environments, ecosystems and species, distributed in 8 different life zones, ranging from premontane rainforest to basal transition to elfin cloud forest.
The route through the Volcano Tenorio National Park is 3.5 km long and the following attractions are being visited during the hike: The Rio Celeste waterfall with its height of 30 meters, the panoramic viewpoint (overlooking the Massif of the Volcano Tenorio and Montezuma), the Blue Lagoon, the Bubblings, the Hot springs and the “Teñideros”, where, if the climate permits, the curious phenomenon of the blue coloration of the water can be observed.

DAY 9: La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano
Fortuna de San Carlos is the closest tourist center to Arenal Volcano.
The Arenal volcano began operations in July 1968 with emissions, lava, steam and explosions of materials, accompanied by strong shaking. One of the craters of the volcano is still active yet. These phenomena are part of the daily life of this community. The land here is very fertile and productive.
Horseback ride to the Rio Fortuna Waterfall.
Enjoy an adventurous ride watching the beautiful scenery offered by the place. Walk through an impressive trail up to the waterfall and the Rio Fortuna. In this wonderful place you can enjoy nature and take a cool relaxing bath.

DAY 10: Visit to the Integral Farm
Integral Farm with Medicinal Plants
The Integral Farm with medicinal plants from the Berrocal Sandoval family is located in the Z13 community of La Fortuna. This family offers a tour of their integral farm in which the owner, Cristina, will explain the curative properties of medicinal plants and herbs. Moreover the process of harvesting, drying and industrializing the plants will be explained. You also will have the opportunity to taste a delicious herbal tea.
Visit to Los Laureles Hot Springs with wonderful view of the volcano.

DAY 11: Canopy and journey to the Pacific
We will continue the journey to the Pacific coast towards Quepos. Stop during the trip in San Luis de San Ramon to enjoy the Canopy Adventure.

El Silencio is the product of the fights between small farmers (campesinos) for their land. Today they take care of nature protection, for example with their Wild Life Rescue Centre. Near Quepos, with natural waterfalls and wells as well as the River Savegre, El Silencio offers a cozy atmosphere.
DAY 12: Manuel Antonio National Park
Pura Vida on the Beach – Visit to the Manuel Antonio National Park
It is one of the most impressive landscapes of Costa Rica, with its white sandy beaches and green leaves between the great mountains. The Manuel Antonio National Park finds itself in the life zone of very humid tropical forest. It protects patches of primary forest, secondary forest, mangroves, beach vegetation, marine environments, islands and a 14 hectare lagoon.

Transfer to Uvita and accommodation at Hotel Canto de Ballenas
DAY 14: Marino Ballena National Park
Boat tour to watch whales, dolphins and practice the snorkeling. Also visit to the Marino Ballena National Park.

DAY 15: Return to San Jose
Transfer to the capital of Costa Rica.
Visit to the center of San José. You can visit: Central Market, National Theater, Gold Museum, Craft Market etc.
